Cake

In Harshad Deshmane’s understated, elegant family drama Cake, a young woman who came of age in an abusive household reflects on her birthday and how much her life has changed since she moved on.

This score needed a light touch, honoring the power in the the simplicity of the filmmaking. For this purpose, I chose to create a score with over 60 extremely soft layers of vocals, strings, low winds and bowed wind chimes, to achieve a subliminal, dense intensity matching the “about-to-burst” feeling of the main character.

For the end titles music (viewable at the end of my film music reel) I wrote a piece for strings and flute, performed by composer and instrumentalist Lumi Luo. The simple, lovely tune channels the journey of the main character from a dark & trapped place to one of love and freedom from abuse.
